Adventure Guiding Winand

Biography

  • Youth:
I grew up with a number of passions. The first ones I remember are music and KLJ (a youth movement in Belgium, scouts-ish). Later I noticed that I could actually add cycling to this list of passions. During my school career it became clear that I could expand my passion for cycling into a passion for sports. As a result, I chose Science and Sport in secondary school and later continued this path with the bachelor’s degree program in Sport and Movement. Through the KLJ and numerous sports camps I gained my first experiences in working with groups, organizing activities, camps and events.

  • The first experiences abroad:
During my Bachelor’s degree in Sports and Movement at Howest, I took the opportunity to go on Erasmus in Finland. There I followed a module about Activity Tourism. Afterwards the idea came: “why don’t I work abroad for a season?” And so in 2016, from one week to the next, I left for the winter season in a mountainious region in Germany. A good first experience, but I thought: “this could be much better!”. After this winter I went to Mallorca for the summer where I gained my first professional experience as a cycling guide (mountainbike and race bike). Later on I got the hang of it and went to Austria for a winter.

  • A second home:
In Austria I ended up in the charming and picturesque mountain village of Schröcken: about 220 inhabitants at 1200 meters above sea level. After the first seasons I felt more and more at home here and I was more and more included in the village. After 4 winter seasons, the time had come to fully commit myself and I moved to Austria. I lived here for 2 years full time, which puts the counter at 6 winters and 2 summers (until the spring of 2023). During those 2 years I also became a member of the music association where I played the horn and I became part of the Austrian Mountain Rescue team of Schröcken. Throughout these seasons and years I never stopped following training courses allowing me to broaden my area of expertise relative to nature and mountainsports. During the winters, thanks to a lot of theoretical and physical education and trainings, I reached my current level, which allows me to officially teach and provide avalanche training off-piste. In the summer of 2021, I obtained my canyoning and mountainbike guide degrees and gained extensive experience as a guide in these sports at Holzschopf.com in Schröcken. In the spring of 2023, I followed and completed the training to become a hiking guide, an ideal addition to my company. My thirst of learning never stops, to be continued…

  • The start of my independent adventure:
My family and group of friends are close to my heart, but I can no longer get the beautiful Schröcken out of my heart. After much deliberation, I decided to return to Belgium and build my base there, so what is the way to have a bit of both? Making sure that I can always go back at least as a professional! My experiences in Schröcken, among others, ensure that I can pass on my passions to my guests with enthusiasm and security in the alpine landscape that I particularly value. I would like to invite you to be part of my adventure, be my passenger!
